THEME: Water Body Rejuvenation & Ecosystem Revival
SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation & SDG 15 – Life on Land
ABOUT THE PROJECT:Urban and peri-urban lakes are under increasing threat due to encroachment, pollution, and sedimentation. This project focuses on the ecological and functional restoration of degraded lakes to ensure they act as sustainable water reservoirs and biodiversity hotspots. The approach involves rejuvenating the lake’s hydrology, removing pollutants, strengthening embankments, and promoting community stewardship. Reviving these water bodies contributes to groundwater recharge, improves water quality, prevents urban flooding, and creates green public spaces.
SCOPE OF PROJECT:
1. De-silting and removal of sludge from the lakebed
2. Strengthening of bunds and natural embankments
3. Installation of inlet filtration and sediment traps
4. Plantation of native aquatic and riparian species
5. Creation of walking paths, fencing, and signage for public interaction
6. Community awareness programs and waste management measures to prevent future contamination
IMPACT:
1. Improved groundwater levels and seasonal water availability
2. Revived use of ponds for irrigation, livestock, and daily needs
3. Enhanced biodiversity including fish, birds, and aquatic flora
4. Reduced dependency on borewells and external water sources
